Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. operates in the Bituminous coal and lignite--surface sector. Alliance Resource Partners, L.P. (ARLP Partnership) is a limited partnership. The Company is a diversified producer and marketer of coal primarily to the United States utilities and industrial users. It operates nine underground mining complexes in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, and West Virginia. ARLP Partnership is constructing a new mining complex in West Virginia, and it also operates a coal loading terminal on the Ohio River at Mt. Vernon, Indiana. The mining activities are conducted in three geographic regions, including Illinois Basin, Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian regions. As of December 31, 2010, ARLP Partnership had approximately 697.4 million tons of coal reserves in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. During the year ended December 31, 2010, the Company sold 91.5% of its total tons to electric utilities, of which 93.5% was sold to utility plants with installed pollution control devices.
