UK Coal PLC operates in the Bituminous coal--underground sector. UK COAL PLC is engaged in surface and underground coal mining, property regeneration and management, and power generation. The Company operates in four segments: Deep mining, Surface mining, Property and Other. Deep mining comprises the underground mining operations of the Company and related labour services, the methane generation operations and the captive insurance company. During the fiscal year ended December 25, 2010 (fiscal 2010), the Company had three operating deep mines located in central and northern England. During fiscal 2010, it had six active coaling surface mines and planning committee approval or consent to mine one further site. During fiscal 2010, it had a portfolio of approximately 37,900 acres consisting of agricultural and undeveloped land and business parks. Other includes any operations not controlled by the mining or property businesses and unallocated central activities.
